Original Character Application
Full name of Character: Samantha Jayne Adams
Nickname/Alias: Sam
Race: Human
Alignment/Affiliation(s): Lawful/Civilian
Occupation/class: Paramedic
Physical Appearance: Samantha is a small woman in stature, and about as far from intimidating as you can get. She stands only at 5’5 and is often called ‘delicate’ when describing her features. Her frame is curvy, housing long, lean muscles that speak of no extraordinary strength but a strong penchant for endurance. A must in her line of work. Samantha is often seen wearing jeans and a comfortable shirt when outside of her uniform, and prefers simple comforts over high fashion or trendy styles.
Abilities:
Healing: Samantha is sometimes considered a prodigy, a woman gifted with a sense of medicine and fine doctoring skills. Given the right conditions she is able to perform even some of the more complex operations and has saved numerous lives. Just as some cars speak to mechanics, the body speaks to Samantha, allowing her to react quickly, professionally and accurately. This is no otherworldly ability; Samantha is just a human with a keen set of skills.
Self Defense: She is a lover, not a fighter, but there have been numerous occasions where the woman has been in harmful situations. Living in Gotham City does that to people, paramedic or not. She’s trained in a variety of self-defense styles, preferring judo over all in order to protect herself without performing too much lasting physical damage. She knows how to disarm an opponent with a knife or a gun, but wouldn’t ever use them against someone in retaliation.
Weaknesses: She doesn’t know how to swim, and while she isn’t afraid to sit at the edge of a pool or wade in a lake, she still feels uneasy around deep bodies of water. Angry dogs also frighten her… especially the big ones.
Personality: Some might call her soft spoken, but in reality Samantha simply listens before she speaks. She’s gentle and kind, but would fight fiercely for her beliefs and her loved ones. She makes the best sort of friend even if she has the habits of being distant. Her will is strong and nearly unbreakable, and when it comes to standing up for what she believes in she doesn’t back down, even when the odds are against her.
Background:
Her history is something she would much rather keep buried in the past; Samantha grew up in luxury, with a mother who tops Hollywood’s charts and a father who was a blessing to the medicine community. Born in London, the family relocated to LA , California when Samantha was nine years old. Her mother, Isabella, would often travel for movie shoots, leaving Sam and her brother Bannon in their father’s care. It was common for Samantha to tag along with her father as he gave presentations on new procedures at the local colleges, or to watch him perform surgeries at the hospital he worked at. She was a ‘daddy’s girl’ from the very beginning and held respect and fascination for what he was able to do.
Bannon’s death, while he was off exploring college campuses, was the first travesty, and only pushed Sam’s desires to join the medical field. While he had been mugged and stabbed for refusing to hand over his wallet fast enough, (and only for a measly $36,) Samantha always felt that there could have been more for the paramedics to have done to save him. Because of this, Samantha wanted only the best medical training, and after completing the entry exams she got into Harvard before transferring into University of Washington.
Samantha was twenty-two when she received the call that her father had been found murdered in his office, strangled to death the night before. Isabella was away in Russian filming for another movie leaving her to take care of the pieces.
The case was left as a mystery, unsolved, and with a grieving mother desperately sought attention and that Samantha struggled to relate to, she moved back to California and attended Stanford University, trying to keep what remained of their family together. A year later, after having a falling out with her mother due to a breech of trust, Samantha decided to move to Gotham city in order to offer her services somewhere that could use them. She joined Gotham FD as a paramedic, and is new to the city, looking to keep her relation to the attention craving Hollywood actress to herself. Sam was content to be as far away from her mother as possible for the time being, at least without the need of a passport.
Family:
Mother: Isabella Adams –Hollywood Actress. Living
Father: James Adams – Doctor. Deceased at age 36
Brother: Bannon Adams – Deceased at age 19.
Attitude: People come first; she looks out for herself second. Samantha inherited $16 million dollars after her father’s death, an inheritance she has barely even touched since it’s been sent to her bank account. She lives frugal and simply, far more content with a good cup of tea and some old fashion movies, than in a club or out buying designer brands off the rack.
Traits: She is an excellent artist, in drawing as well as abstract painting. To her dancing is an expression of the soul, and singing comes to her as easily as healing the wounded. She focuses herself around hobbies in order to cover up her pain and discomforts. If she’s too busy then she can’t think about them, right?
Self-perception: Samantha see’s herself as a willing tool and conduit to help society. She’s eager to save the sick and ease those in pain, and trusts in her beliefs and abilities as well as her common sense to get results. She supports the hero community fully, even if she has never met any of them.
Interaction with other People: Samantha doesn’t have a lot of friends; for all of her kind words and eagerness, trust is hard to come by. She distances herself from those she see’s she can grow close too, never getting over the deaths of her brother and father. Because of this, she tends to inflict more pain on herself by not accept her own personal human contact to fill or even ease the voids.
Goals: While she isn’t aware of this herself, yet, I would eventually like to establish Samantha as a ‘go too’ medic for the hero community when they are injured. She’s trustworthy and talented and doesn’t ever ask too many questions; having a great respect for privacy- after all she seems to seek it for herself.
Problems/Crisis: The more danger that’s present, the more clear and calm her mind seems to be. Samantha reacts well under pressure and is skilled in keeping a stoic face. Although when fear is present its most visible in her eyes. She tends to lock up her emotions, only to allow them to leak out when she has the privacy.
General:
Humphrey Bogart is an idol of hers; she believes that he was the last of the true romantics. Samantha herself is also a romantic at heart… though she’ll never openly admit to it. Sushi is her favorite food, tea is often seen cupped in her hand. She has a cat she adopted named Diesel who sounds like one when he purrs, and while the woman might be quiet and a little reserved, she has a thrill for adventure.
Role-play Sample
Two whole weeks seemed like an absurd amount of time; but there it went, stripped away and removed like a Band-Aid. Time had moved in an agonizing crawl at the beginning. Hours seemed to stretch on for days while Samantha tried to reestablish for herself new roots in a new city. This was going to be a new life. A fresh start with a new set of rules and different people and… new street names.
Commonly, the general popluace believed that a paramedic only needed to know how to stop the bleeding and get the patient to the hospital, that that was the hardest part of the job. These same people seemed to forget the finer details of executing that plan. Compared to places like Seattle and San Diego, Gotham’s streets were no cake walk. Memorizing where one ended and another connected usually only left Samantha with a headache, but by the time she had memorized the streets and the routes she would be patrolling here in Gotham, Samantha felt an overwhelming urge to scream.
She settled instead with sitting down on her over-stuffed couch in the middle of her living room, watching her favorite movie Casablanca and sipping on a mug of white tea. For tonight she wasn’t going to worry about which exit was the smartest to take during rush-hour to get to Gotham General. Samantha wasn’t going to care that Parker was really two different streets, and was also Addison depending on which side of the road you were driving on. Tonight it would only be Samantha and Humphrey Bogart, the scent of burning lavender and vanilla candles, and Tylenol.
Everyone needed a break every once and a while… and Sam still had three days before she started her new job at GCFD, District Sixteen. As a bonus, she always had the option of walking; despite the tales of the twisted city, her firehouse was only two blocks away, hardly a distance one could get into trouble in, and with the intensive research the woman had dedicated in picking out her apartment, it was decidedly one of the safest streets in the city. Now here was hoping that Sam’s infamous luck didn’t rear its ugly head and try to play games.
