Canon Character Application
Character Name: Jack Napier (Possible name, possible alias)
Nickname/Alias: The Joker, Clown Prince of Crime, the Harlequin of Hate, and the Ace of Knaves.
Version: This version will be mostly based on the animated version, with a sprinkling of the comic book and Nolanverse Jokers for flavor. I plan to go the route of a “highly intelligent psychopath with a warped, sadistic sense of humor.”
Race: Human
Alignment/Affiliation(s): Injustice Gang, Injustice League, The Society, Club of Villains, Justice League of Arkham
Occupation/class: Criminal Genius
Physical Appearance: Clown-like with white skin, green hair, and bright red lips. He looks almost anorexic in his slenderness, and tends to favor purple formal wear.
Abilities: High intelligence, Skilled chemist, Access to a variety of gadgets, combat, Joker venom, high pain tolerance to point of sadomachism, lack of empathy, Supersane, immune to scarecrow’s fear gas, immune to hypnotism, immune to Poison Ivy/poisonous blood (due to building immunity via non-lethal dosages), durability (survived point-blank gunshot to head).
Weaknesses: Batman
Personality: Crazy like a fox.
Super-sanity - Joker’s mental state is sometimes described as a state of super-sanity—a form of ultra-sensory perception or hyperawareness. Often times he is seen breaking the forth wall through both animation and comics. He’s frequently addressed the audience, hinting that he’s either portrayed as being aware of the audience, or imaging that he has one.
Insane vs Sane – (Or, “There’s a method in my madness.”) If Joker really is insane, then he is aware of his insanity; therefore, this cognitive awareness of his insanity is a marker of his sanity. Often times, Joker is referred to in comics and animations as being “psychotic.” This is an incorrect diagnosis assigned by the writers, when taking in to consideration Joker's behavioral traits.
Sociopathy vs Psychopathy - Joker may not have true personality of his own, but is instead able to act in a manner that best benefits him at any given time. To this end, it has been suggested that his insanity is an act; if so, he’s possibly more a sociopath or psychopath than a psychotic. Whether the Joker is a psychopath or a sociopath depends on whether he is an organized criminal, or a disorganized criminal. It gets a bit tricky here, when try to determine on which side the Joker falls. Although Joker may act completely insane in his motivations, the way he accomplishes his crimes—his MO—seems to usually be well thought out or planned; thus suggesting he might be a psychopath. Joker seems too organized in his methodologies to be a sociopath, even if his manner of conduct often looks impulsive and chaotic, it’s seems to be a sort of organized chaos. However, on the flip side, psychopaths have a confused sense of right and wrong, and may have a hard time telling the difference. While sociopaths do know the difference between what’s socially accepted as right and wrong, they lack a conscious. Joker does know the difference between right and wrong, but he doesn’t care. In that sense, he seems sociopathic.
Exhibited Characteristics of Psychopathy/Sociopathy- Superficial charm, pathological lying, tendency to manipulate others, doesn’t feel guilt or remorse, lack of empathy, and also doesn’t accept responsibility for his actions (although he does—almost egocentrically—claim responsibility, he evades repercussions).
Background/History: Because his history is simply massive, the full backstory can be viewed on his wikia page at: batman.wikia.com/wiki/The_Joker
For the purposes of this role-play, though, there are a few things that I’d like to point out regarding how I will incorporate Joker into this forum.
Origin – Although Joker has no set or confirmed origin, I am going to go with the one provided in “The Killing Joke.” In this storyline, Joker was revealed to have once been a former engineer who worked at a chemical plant who had quit his job to pursue the life of a stand-up comedian. However, he turned out to not be a very unsuccessful once. With a wife to support and a baby on the way, he was hard pressed to find a way to make money. He ended up joining up with a group of thieves whose members would often don the moniker of Red Hood. During the events of this story, Joker ended up going through “one bad day” in which he lost his grip upon “notions of order and sanity” and snapped. First, his wife and unborn child were killed in an electrical accident. Next, he was forced to follow through with the planned heist of the playing card company. Next, upon reaching the chemical plant, he encountered Batman and ended up falling into the chemical vat—this marking his transformation into The Joker. Prior to his transformation, Joker could have already been subject to some psychopathic behavioral traits; however, he might have adapted to living a relatively normal like with his wife. His failure at comedy could have been the result of him simply sucking at comedy, or a sign that he lacked the emotional capacity to understand humor. Either way, upon his wife's death and after his disfigurement, the Joker lost all reason to maintain a "normal" life.

"Someone who is 'psychotic' is experiencing symptoms of psychosis, a mental disorder, which can include auditory hallucinations, such as hearing voices; visual hallucinations, where they see objects that are not truly there; or have delusional thoughts, despite evidence to show that such beliefs are incorrect -- such as believing that one's movements are being tracked by deep space satellites -- or disorganized behavior," Bender said. "In the vast majority of depictions, the Joker is not experiencing such symptoms; rather, the Joker has shown symptoms of psychopathy." Bender says psychopathy is a personality construct and not a diagnosis of a mental disorder. "Psychopathy reflects interpersonal characteristics and behavior that are often rooted in a lack of empathy," Bender said. "In the comics, television shows, and films, the Joker is much more akin to a psychopath and is not psychotic." – www.sociopaticworld.com
